Laredo Street, directly outside Navarro’s front door, bustled with vendors selling food, children at play, and traders conducting their daily business. The street itself, if followed outside the city, turned to a long trail eventually leading to the city of Laredo. Life in Laredito revolved around Laredo Street. Visitors to San Antonio’s public plazas enjoyed local fare such as chili con carne and tamales at chili stands like this one at Haymarket Plaza.
