For Beethoven, this cast must have been like torture. First the sculptor Franz Klein covered his face with oil and then with liquid plaster. Beethoven only got air through two straws in his nose. No wonder, then, that Beethoven is presented here as a grim person, for whom posterity has long taken him for.
