Lilongwe is the capital city of Malawi. Like many cities in Africa, it has seen phenomenal growth in the last 50 years. In 1966 the population was about 19,000; in 1987 the census counted 223,000 inhabitants; and in 2015 1,080,000 residents called Lilongwe home. . The Landsat image was acquired 27 August 1984, and the ASTER image on 31 July 2015. The images cover an area of 20 by 33 km, and are located at 14 degrees south, 33.8 degrees east.
