The non-profit Kazanjian Foundation sent Carl Sandburg this small bust of Abraham Lincoln in 1958 to commend Sandburg's Lincoln biography. Sandburg received many gifts of praise for his biography in addition to the Pulitzer Prize for history (1940). People viewed Sandburg with the same relatable admiration that they held for Lincoln. "Sandburg was becoming a Lincolnesque character himself; his natural, instinctive identification with Lincoln verged at times on the excessive. But his vision of Lincoln was national more than personal." (Niven, p 437)
