The President Woodrow Wilson House
Washington, DC, United States

Relief of Abraham Lincoln's face mounted on wooden board. The life mask was done by Lennard Wells Volk in 1860. Wilson greatly admired Lincoln and hung this mask in his honor. The mask is a bronze cast made from the 1860 original. This mask was copied in 1886 for John Milton Hay, Lincoln's private secretary. President Wilson corresponded with Robert J Collier (VP and chairman of the Lincoln Farm Association) on multiple occasions from 1914 to 1917 and delivered an address on Abraham Lincoln at a ceremony at Lincoln's cabin in Kentucky on September 4, 1916. It seems likely that Collier presented Wilson with the mask on this occasion.
