This lintel is from the facade of a Crusader-turned-Mamluk castle in Safed, which was a provincial capital. It is carved with the leopard emblem of the Mamluk Sultan Baybars (1260–1277) in relief. Baybars was a renowned sultan and warrior, who succeeded not only in driving out the Crusaders but also in stopping the invading Mongol army at the battle of Ayn Jalut (En Harod).
