Andrew Morrow (b. 1973)
Andrew Morrow is a contemporary Canadian painter, noted for his complex figurative paintings. Trained as an illustrator, his paintings put the emphasis on the painted medium itself. The themes in his paintings most often refer to the idea of history, both inhabiting and extending the tradition of history painting. Morrow’s historical narratives have an ambiguity about them, composed of unidentified landscapes and figures that seem to continuously shift in position. Fragmented brush strokes suggest an unfinished state evoking the fragmented nature of memory itself.
A graduate of Queens University and the University of Ottawa, Morrow has exhibited widely throughout Canada, including the Sudbury Art Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto, the McMaster Museum of Art, the New Brunswick Museum and the Edmonton Art Gallery. His work is held in the private and public collections of the Royal Norwegian collection, Kingston City Hall, the City of Ottawa Art Collection and the Fine Art Collection Desjardins Group, Montreal, Canada.
