Carl Sandburg attended Lombard College from 1899 to 1902. "The need to work had closed the door of public education for [Sandburg] when he was thirteen. Ironically, it was the monotony of dead-end work which impelled him to enlist in the army, and it was his status as a veteran which entitled him to free tuition at Lombard College." (Niven, p 45) There Sandburg began writing regularly, and he was co-editor of the yearbook as well as the editor of the college journal, The Lombard Review. He was also the college's reporter for theGalesburg Evening Mail. Sandburg did not graduate.
