Born in the Redstone Baptist Mission in Indian Territory, Stephen Mopope would become the most prolific of the “Kiowa Five” group, a collection of artists that actually consisted of six individuals—Mopope, Spencer Asah, James Auchiah, Jack Hokeah, Lois Smoky, and Monroe Tsatoke—who studied under Oscar Brousse Jacobson at the University of Oklahoma.
Mopope was also an accomplished flute player and dancer, biographical references that the viewer sees in the two pieces selected for this exhibition. Mopope executed both works in tempera, a fast drying paint medium consisting of colored pigments mixed with a binder such as egg yolk.
