Chuck Close has achieved iconic status within the art world and beyond for his portraits executed on a massive scale. He is renowned for the inventive techniques he utilizes to paint the human face. Working from polaroid pictures, Close uses a grid to scale up to his preferred large size, painstakingly filling each square with intricate patterns to build a mosaic-like image. He has duplicated this effect in his screenprints. This silkscreen depicts Lyle Ashton Harris (American, born 1965), a friend of Close and an artist who works in diverse mediums, including photography, video, installation, and performance, to explore ideas of gender, sexuality, belonging, and various cultural histories.
