Having dismantled his body of volunteers and refusing all awards, medals, titles, etc., Garibaldi retired to the modest house he had built for himself on the island of Caprera. Garibaldi's legendary status was also fuelled by the image he left of himself - a generous hero who conquered a whole Kingdom and then left it to Vittorio Emanuele without asking for anything in return.
