In the early 1880s, Madam Yoko was installed as Paramount Chief of the Kpaa Mende. She proved to be a very useful diplomat for the Colonial Administration and other friendly chiefs. Madam Yoko had a lot of respect throughout her region, particularly among women. She was a powerful member of the Sande society.
