Madonna and Child

Giovanni Francesco Caroto1500 - 1549

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

In this work, the background of the village, with its soft and luminous chromatic modulations, denounces a generically Venetian culture and in any case extraneous to any influence of Flemish landscapes, suggesting a dating in the third decade of the 16th century. Due to the sustained quality and the intrinsic coherence of the image, the painting is undoubtedly autographed, but it shows that it has suffered from drastic cleanings both in the skin tones and in the backgrounds; in fact, the comparison with historical photographs reveals a significant reduction in the pictorial material, with the loss of some naturalistic details, such as the saplings in front of the building on the left.
