The composition is the oldest known replica of the so-called ‘Madonna del sacco’ (Madonna with the Sack), the central compartment of the polyptych commissioned to the Perugino by the monks of the Certosa di Pavia in 1495-1496, now kept at the National Gallery of London.
The very high quality of the painting, revealed during its restoration in the 1990’s, has allowed to assign its execution to the Perugino’s own workshop.
