Madonna of the Rose Garden

Stefano di Giovanni1420

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

Within a garden whose perspective construction varies according to the angle of vision for each separate object, like in a Persian miniature, sit the Virgin and Child and saint Catherine, who weaves a crown from flowers gathered by tiny angels. There are exotic birds, an infinity of flowers and plants and an exquisite fountain resembling an ostensory with nude allegorical figures – heavenly transposition of the fountain of eternal youth of courtly cycles. The garden is projected against a golden sky into which other figures of angels are etched.
