The panel is the centrepiece of a larger poliptych from the parish Church of Santi Leonardo and Cristoforo in Monticchiello, near Pienza. The other elements are probably: a Saint Agathe now at Le Mans Museum, and the panels with Saint Leonard, Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret at the Florentine Horne Museum. It is a masterpiece by Pietro Loreazetti, astonishing for the extraordinary vivacity of the interaction between mother and son and the useful lessons of his brother, Ambrogio; Simone Martini in the refined style; of Giovanni Pisano in expressing pathos and eventually of Giotto.

- Artist Biography: Pietro Lorenzetti is considered as one of the founders of the Sienese artistic tradition: his style, starting from Cimabue's lesson, was really influenced by the study of space and perspective by Giotto. He worked, as well as Simone Martini, in the basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi; then in Arezzo. In Siena, where he realized some of his masterpiece: the frescoes, now lost, on the facade of Santa Maria della Scala Hospital, together with his brother Ambrogio; and the Nativity of the Virgin (1342) for the Cathedral. Like so much of the Sienese population, as like Ambrogio himself, he seems to have fallen victim to the Black Plague of 1348.
