The beautiful marble Madonna and Child with traces of gilding on
her crown was deposited in the museum in 2004 by the Ospedale Maggiore of
Milan, which had inherited it in 1914 from Countess Eugenia Litta, hence the
name of "Madonna Litta". The
rendering of the figures and the quality of execution have convinced critics to
attribute this statue to Bonino da Campione. Depicting the connection between
the characters through their gaze and the gesture of the Child, intent on
writing on a parchment, is an interesting iconographic idea. The face of the Madonna is animated by a
happy smile that gives it a lively expressive charge and a strongly human
interpretation, rare in fourteenth-century Lombard sculpture; also rare is the
dynamic pose of the figure, obtained through the refined and rhythmic drapery
of the garments.
