On 26 January 1950, the Madras Presidency officially was rechristened the Madras State. The boundaries of the Madras State underwent revisions in 1953, 1956 and finally in 1969 when it became Tamil Nadu as we know it today. The capital of the former Madras Presidency, Madras continued to be the capital of the state. The name of Madras was changed to Chennai in 1996.
