This ca 1865 painting, by traveling artist George Frankenstein, depicts the town of Appomattox Court House, Virginia where on April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia to United States forces under General Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the Civil War. The McLean House (center right) was the site of the 90-minute meeting that led to peace and the reunification of the nation following four years of war and over 700,000 American casualties.
