Kamaicha maker attaching strings to the hollow and rounded part of the instrument. It has 17 strings, out of which 3 are made of goat intestines while the remaining are made of steel. The bow used is made of horse-hair!
About the craft: Manganiyars are hereditary communities of traditional folk musicians living mostly in the Barmer and Jaisalmer districts of western Rajasthan. Their music has survived decades owing to the Jajmani system which is fundamental to their art form and also a source of livelihood. The repertoire of Manganiyar music covers qawwali, sufi songs, bhajans and songs on life cycle, rituals, festivals. The community's identity instrument is the Kamaicha.
