This portrait of a praying Jew perhaps depicts the Shema Yisrael (Hebrew: Hear, O Israel!), the most important Jewish prayer. While it is spoken one should cover one’s eyes with the hand. However, this is supposed to be done with the right hand and not with the left hand as in this drawing. But maybe the portrait is actually a self-portrait drawn from the artist’s reflection in a mirror, so it might actually be an inverted depiction of the right hand.
