In 1916, Countess Nerina Armandi Avogli bequeathed her villa and surrounding grounds to the City of Bologna, specifically for the purpose of establishing a modern art gallery and public gardens. While the war delayed its opening, the City quickly acted on her wish, acquiring new works to establish the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, which would finally open to the public in 1925.
