Mami Wata Sculpture

This fine wooden carving is said to represent Mami Wata, a West African spirit who lives in water. It depicts a female head with a ridged hairstyle and segmented neck typical of Mende sowei masks. The figure has the body of a snake, which is coiled around the base of the neck and forms a base.
