This twenty-one-deity mandala is dedicated to an eight-armed form of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara called Amoghapasha, or “Unfailing Lasso.” At the top of the painting are the Five Buddhas headed by Amitabha, the primary buddha of Avalokiteshvara’s family, and flanked by the bodhisattvas Manjushri and Maitreya. In the corners of the mandala four main deities—Buddha Ratnasambhava, Prajnaparamita, and two other forms of Avalokiteshvara—are flanked by four-armed emanations of Avalokiteshvara rescuing devotees from eight types of dangers.
