Manner of Crossing the First River in Peak Hole

This print is from George Woodward's book 'Eccentric Excursions or Literary & Pictorial Sketches of Countenance, Character & County in different parts of England & South Wales', published in 1816. It shows visitors to Peak Cavern passing through a low tunnel by boat to reach the large inner cave.

Peak Cavern is the largest natural cave entrance in the British Isles. The cave was known as the Devil's Arse and appears in William Camden's 'Britannia' under that name in 1586. Its name was changed to Peak Cavern in 1880, for Queen Victoria's visit. It lies within the Peak District National Park.
