A map of the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembels of Mumbai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. All the Art Deco buildings within the inscribed property are highlight in red.
'Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai' were inscribed as a World Heritage Site on 30 June 2018. The site has 92 buildings of 4 different architectural styles – Victorian Gothic, Neoclassical, Indo Saracenic and Art Deco, of which 76 are Deco. The 22 acre Oval Maidan (Park) is straddled by contrasting ensembles from the 19th century - Victorian Gothic on its east, and 20th century Art Deco on its west, representing two different waves of urban expansion. The imposing Victorian Gothic public buildings are recognised as the finest and most cohesive group of its type in the world. The Deco buildings on the western side are the earliest expressions of modernism in the city and are unique for the UNESCO recognition accorded to modern living heritage.
