- Significance: The battle between HMAS SYDNEY and SMS EMDEN on 9 November 1914 was a significant strategic and morale building victory for Australia and the Allies in World War 1 and became one of the navy's proudest moments. The EMDEN had been causing disruptions to British ship movements in the Indian Ocean as part of the German East Asia Squadron under the command of Karl von Muller.
