Hong Kong, Hong Kong

This map was included in Mercator’s Atlas of 1606, and China is still portrayed in the shape of a rectangle. The positions of coastal provinces are basically correct, but there are many errors in the inland provinces. Different colours were used to distinguish between China and its neighbouring countries. On the left side of the map is a legendary Chinese wind-driven vehicle; on the right the penalty paid by Japanese Christians for their faith.
