These small (1–2 cm in diameter) spheres from clay, glass, horn/bone or stone have been used from the times of Antiquity to today to play the all-round favourite game of marbles (German: Murmeln). The rules are somewhat similar to what we know as curling today. The player tries to roll their marbles as close to the target as possible (a spike or proportionately larger marble, or simply a little hole), while trying to push aside their opponent's marbles.
