Maria of Yugoslavia

Although her given name was Marie, Maria of Yugoslavia was called “Mignon” to distinguish her from her mother, Queen Marie of Romania. Between 1922 and 1929, Mignon was Queen Consort of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. She was Queen Consort of Yugoslavia from 1929-1934. This painting was brought to America by Alma de Bretteville Spreckels. In plans for Maryhill Museum of Art that were drafted in 1924, the artist, Pavle Joanović (Paul Joanovitch), was named as one of the institution’s honorary directors.
