Alfredo Volpi was born in Lucca, Italy, in 1896. In 1897, the Volpi family migrated to São Paulo and established a trade. He began painting in 1911 as a decorator painter. In the 1930s, he was a member of the Santa Helena group. He took part in the first Família Artística Paulista Exhibition in 1937. He won the award for best national painter at the II São Paulo Biennial in 1953. In 1956, he held an individual exhibition at the MAM-SP, which hold a retrospective of his work in 1975 and one commemorative exhibition at the age of 80, in 1986. In 1973, he received the Anchieta Medal from the São Paulo City Council Order of Rio Branco at the Grand Master's degree. He died in 1988, in São Paulo (SP).
