Provenance: This central element of the ceiling in the Mars Salon was commissioned in 1672 from the painter Claude II Audran who was not yet a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. The complex composition of the painting indicates that he very probably worked from preparatory sketches by Charles Le Brun, whose pupil he was.
