Masterpiece

This large and elaborate grille was Cyril Colnik's "Masterpiece." It showcased the mastery of metalworking techniques and apprentice was required to demonstrate in order to be elevated to the rank of master craftsman. The figure of Vulcan, god of fire and patron saint of metalworkers, is featured in the center of the spiralling composition. Dynamic organic shapes surround Vulccan, including winding vines, curling acanthus leaves, and exuberant flowers -- all characteristic elements of Colnik's later work.

Colnik completed this work at the age of 22 while a student at the Industrial Art School of Munich. His skillful work there secured him a position as an assistant for the German metalwork exhibition at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where he won recognition for the "Masterpiece" and for an iron repoussé eschutcheon.
