In the past, rush mats were spread throughout each home in Korea during the hot summer days. The rush mat, which made people forget about the hot weather—even if for just a moment—is called hwamunseok, a traditional craftwork (a mat woven with painted rush and patterns like flowers), and goes back more than a thousand years. Inheriting a family business for the second generation, Park Yoonhwan, CEO of Ganghwadoryeong Hwamunseok, is leading his brand through design development that matches today’s sensibility with the style’s original tradition. He deals with everything from rush farming to the production and sales of hwamunseok on Ganghwado Island. This mat series reinterprets traditional Korean mats with a contemporary feel.
