Wood cane with a hook at the end for a handle.

This simple cane would have been used by the elderly, injured, or infirm for help in getting around. A former fashion accessory, the walking stick evolved from being a symbol of stature into a standard walking aid. Matthew was hard-working on the farm, but may have used a “walking stick” for support when needed!
