View of the southeastern side of Mauna Loa (lit. *Long mountain,* 13,679ft). A classic shield volcano, Mauna Loa is the world's most massive active volcano, taken from its base more than 10,000m below on the Pacific Ocean floor. The last eruption of Mauna Loa was in 1984. This image, an aerial view taken from off the southeastern coast of the Big Island, shows some of the more recent black lava flows which reached the ocean.
