Mayor Walter Washington, Marion Barry and U.S. Secretary of Labor Willard B. Wirtz sign a contract with Pride, Inc.
Future D.C. Mayor Marion Barry and fellow activists Mary Treadwell, Carroll Harvey, and Rufus "Catfish" Mayfield co-founded Pride, Inc., in summer 1967. The successful jobs and training program for unemployed teens and young adults became a model for Barry’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), which exists today.
