- Story: 1996 In this photo I must be no older that nine-years of age. The photograph was taken at the then annual Christmas party in Qunu, which was around the same time that my whole family came down for Christmas. I remember at this age my younger brother and I were like my grandfather’s little angels, going everywhere with him. Whenever I spoke to my grandfather at that age it was usually to ask for something, or complain about my younger brother or cousins, and other times just to ask him what he was doing for the day and tell him what I was going to do. This must have been one of the very first Christmas parties! I remember Coca-Cola being a main sponsor of the event. I was very jealous though, for the fact that my grandfather was spending all this time with thousands of other children and not his own, asking them what they wanted to be when they grow up, taking photos and so forth. At this particular Christmas party I remember running up to him, being sent by my other cousins, and asking when we could open our Christmas presents? We were to eager to open them and play with our new toys! But he told me that we should wait until after dinner to open them, and in the meantime gave me one of the presents that all the thousands of children were getting! The only reason I think that he told us to wait till after dinner was so that he could see the expression on our faces as we ripped open our presents, our joy and excitement at the new toys/games/shoes that we got! The happiness of children, the sheer energy within them, keeps my grandfather smiling and happy! So long as me and my siblings and cousins were happy and smiling it was all smiles with him.
