On April 19, 1988, NYC-born Lana “MC Lyte” Moorer released her critically acclaimed debut LP Lyte as a Rock, the first full-length album by a solo female rap artist. “It feels good [to see women rap artists succeed],” Lyte said. “...No one is starting on ground zero. That was done for us a long time ago, [by MCs like] Sha-Rock and Pebblee-Poo...And since then, all we’ve been doing is laying bricks. Each of us gets the opportunity to lay some bricks in this wall of prominent women in hip hop. And as that wall gets taller, they’re able to see further. They’re able to reach higher heights, so it feels great. We all get to celebrate in that.” MC Lyte wore this jacket during the 2006 VH-1 Hip Hop Honors ceremony.
