Mealtime at a Joint-supported summer colony

Concerned for the welfare and well-being of tens of thousands of Jewish children in need during World War I and the immediate postwar years, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (“the Joint”) set up kindergartens and summer camps and provided food supplements, medical care, and dental treatment. Summer colonies were designed to help restore the health of refugees and orphans with a dose of fresh air away from the hardship and hunger of crowded cities.
