Originally conceived in 1847 as Mekteb-i Tıbbiye (Medical School) and inaugurated in 1849 as the “Mecidiye Barracks”, this structure is designed by M. Smith. Presently known as “Taş Kışla” (Stone Barracks), the complex is comprised of four wings set around a large central courtyard. The minaret rising from a corner of the structure denotes the presence of a mosque within the premises of the barracks. It may be presumed that the mosque of the barracks, which is no longer in existence, was located in the courtyard.
