John McLoughlin, Chief Factor of Fort Vancouver for 20 years, was made a Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great in recognition of his service to the Roman Catholic Church. This medal was delivered to him by Archbishop Frances Blanchet, who had previously established a mission at the fur trading post. According to family accounts, this was McLoughlin's most treasured possession.
