Ashe was a talented piper, and had been instrumental in founding the Black Raven Pipe Band, members of which are pictured here at his funeral, in Lusk in 1910. A large number of organisations and individuals participated in the funeral cortege, including the Lord Mayor, Catholic clerics, members of the Irish Volunteers and National Volunteers, the GAA, Sinn Fein, Cumann na mBan, the Irish Women’s Franchise League, a diverse range of unions, national teachers, Dublin Fire Brigade, and Dublin Corporation workers (Brother Allen collection, courtesy of the Military Archives).
