Amsterdam, Netherlands

The counts of Egmont and of Horne are among the most important nobles in the Netherlands. Immediately following Alva’s arrival they are imprisoned and accused of high treason, lese-majesty, and supporting the Protestants. Their execution takes place on 5 June 1568 in Brussels
Grand-Place. News of their beheading travels beyond the Netherlands via prints and is met with great revulsion.
