Sao Paulo, Brazil

In Pinacoteca collection, the work of Belmiro de Almeida is represented by painting, drawing and sculpture. Born in Minas Gerais in 1858, Belmiro made the academic career most common for nineteenth-century painters in Brazil: he attended the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios and the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. He later became teacher at both institutions. In 1884 he made his first trip to Paris, where he became acquainted and influenced by the work of modernist painters, such as Edgar Degas and Édouard Manet and Claude Monet. He was also known for his cartoons, published in magazines such as O Malho and A Cigarra. He was one of the founders, in 1914, together with Luiz Peixoto and Olegário Mariano do Salão, of the Salão dos Humoristas do Rio de Janeiro.
