For the U.S. Department of the Interior’s first 68 years, the official seal depicted an eagle in varying poses over time. It was not until 1917 that the bison emblem was adopted and pictured is the die for the first bison seal. The bison depicted in the die is sporting a thick coat of fur in the entire front of its body, which is not often seen in other images. The fur on bison is always thicker towards the front and shorter in the back.
