Mezuzah Cover

Traditional Jews affix a mezuzah (literally, "doorpost") to the doorframes of all rooms in their homes. The mezuzah is a scroll inscribed with the shema (verses taken from Deuteronomy), one of the central portions of Jewish liturgy. In order to protect the scrolls of their mezuzot from damage, Moroccan Jews placed them under covers made of silver or cloth such as this example, rather than within a case as is the Ashkenazi practice.
