This is an early study for Krøyer's late masterpiece from 1906 Midsummer Eve Bonfire on Skagen Beach (Skagens Museum). Already in 1892 Krøyer made his first sketches for the painting. This study from 1894 is part of the collection in Anchers Hus. Unlike the final artwork, the sketch does not show members of the artists' colony, but only local villagers around the bonfire. Fourteen years would pass after the first sketches until the final artwork was completed in 1906, when Krøyer was satisfied with his depiction of the blazing bonfire
