The military diploma is an official document inscribed into bronze plates. Diplomas of this kind were issued to retiring veterans of the auxiliary troops after roughly 25 years of loyal service. They conferred Roman citizenship and the right to marry. Their children would automatically be Roman citizens, and could look forward to a fine career. This diploma was issued to a Cananephate whose name we do not know. His father’s name was Amandus. The names of seven witnesses are listed on the back. The administrative centre where all diplomas were registered was in the capital, Rome. This bronze diploma served as a kind of ‘carbon copy’.
