Military Gala Coat from the Republican Period

Museo de Trajes de la Universidad de América

Museo de Trajes de la Universidad de América
Bogotá, Colombia

The Gala suit in the collection is a replica of suit used by Simón Bolivar, who wore many styles of this kind of suit before independence, due his status as the official of the royal army in the Regimiento de los Blancos in the valley of Aragua before 1810.
The Gala Coat had the typical length and styling of the 18th Century, the exterior part of the coat more visible with some embroidery details in gold and red, depicting imagery like laurels, representing the victory of independence.
The coat is adjusted by the waist, with some visible influences and inspirations from the “Dandy” fashion of England, which can be seen around the neck and upper part of the coat
